More than 85 percent of the world’s online population has used the Internet to make a purchase, increasing the market for online shopping by 40 percent in the past two years.
These are the results of the latest Nielsen Global Online Survey on Internet shopping habits.
Globally, more than half ofInternet users have made at least one purchase online in the past month.
The leading trend point out how Internet and Ecommerce is utterly integral part of modern life and Almost no aspect of life remains untouched by online media.
As our lives become more fractured and cluttered, it isn’t surprising that consumers turn to the unrivalled convenience of the Internet when it comes to researching and buying products, said Jonathan Carson, President, International, Nielsen Online.
In Two years the number of people that have shopped on line grew by 40%: from 627 million world ecommerce shoppers in 2006 to to 875 million.
South Korea Internet users are the world most active shoppers online: where 99 percent of those with Internet access have used it to shop on line.
UK is the second leading country of the world (97%), Germany (97%), Japan (97%) with the U.S. at the eighth place with 94%.
Globally, the most popular and purchased items over the Internet are
- Books (41% purchased in the past three months)
- Clothing, Accessories, Shoes (36%)
- Videos , DVDs , Games (24%)
- Airline Tickets (24%)
- Electronic Equipment (23%).
In European Union, Nielsen analysis of the behaviour of the top states (UK, Germany) point out the following trends.
Among Germany’s Internet users:
- 55 percent said they bought books
- 42 percent had bought Clothes/Accessories/Shoes
- and one in four had purchased Music/Videos/DVD’s in the past three months.
Internet users in the UK have the following On Line shopping behavior:
- 45 percent bought books online
- 44 percent bought Videos/DVDs/Games
- 38 percent bought Clothing/Accessories/Shoes
- 37 percent bought Music
- and one in four Internet shoppers also purchased Airline tickets/Reservations on line.
Payment Methods for Internet Shopping:
Credit cards are by far the most common method of payment for online
According to Nielsen, online shoppers tend to stick to the shopping sites they are familiar with, with 60 percent saying they buy mostly from the same site.
“This shows the importance of capturing the tens of millions of new online shoppers as they make their first purchases on the Internet.”
