Search engine and World Wide Web presence Yahoo announced on Friday plans to permit users decline ads targeted to their browsing habits.
In this way Yahoo becomes the latest Internet company to break from a common industry practice as Congress steps up scrutiny of customized advertising and consumer privacy.
Through Yahoo’s Privacy Center, users will have the choice of removing customized ads from the screens of Yahoo pages. The announcement to allow users this option seems to be in response to a privacy letter by four House Members.
The option will likely be available by the end of the month.
But pay attention: If you choose to have behavioural targeting, you will keep on seeing generic ads.
Personally I love behavioral targeting because all advertising I receive is targeted to my specific needs (even if it has to be refined) and I have more chances to receive useful information. Before behavioural targeting all ads was generic useless as spam.
